Hola todos. Perdón que tomó tanto tiempo para escribir este "blog," pero por costumbre tomé muchas fotos de mi viaje y así que tomó mucho tiempo para subirlas. Este "blog" trata de mi viaje a Colombia. La primera ciudad se llama Las Lajas y la segunda, la cual esta en Ecuador se llama La Paz. Mi salud está bien pero estoy muy ocupado. Espero que les gusten las fotos y me encantaría saber como estan.
We left Cotacachi at 3:30 a.m. Sunday the 21st of December. The trip took about three hours and when I woke up my friend Geovanny told me we had arrived in Columbia. I was expecting some border check or something but instead it was rather uneventful. This picture is the first thing I saw when I woke up.
Salimos de Cotacachi a las 3:30 a.m. el Domingo 21 de Diciembre. El viaje demoró algunas tres horas y cuando me desperté mi amigo Geovanny me dijo que habiamos llegado a Colombia. Yo Esperaba algun revisa cuando cruzamos la frontera pero nada pasó. Esta foto es la primera cosa que ví cuando me desperté.
The bus went up a large hill and parked. This is the view from the top. The picture above and to the left is my the corresponding part of the city and the picture to the right is of my right hand view.
El bus subió una colina y paró. Estas son de la vista desde arriba. La foto arriba la mano derecha es de la parte derecha de la ciudad y a la mano izquierda es la parte izquierda.
The above picture is of the very center. Way off in the distance you can see a white statue of the angel Michael casting down Satan. To the left you can see the uppermost part of the cathedral which makes this a place to visit.
La foto arriba es del centro. A lo lejos se puede ver una estatua del angel Michael expulsando Satanas del cielo. A la izquierda se puede ver el techo del catedral, el cual hace este lugar muy especial.
I forgot to mention the purpose of this trip. I accompanied my friends, Geovanny and David, on a yearly pilgrimage which their family takes right before Christmas. In this picture you can see Geovanny, the closest person in the picture, his little brother Jefferson is in the very center with the backpack and to his left is their father Jorge. The rest of the people in the picture are Jorge's employees and their family. He paid for the bus trip for them all to make the same pilgrimage. The next day Jorge's entire family took another bus to do the same thing. The boys of course stayed at home and I will talk about what we all did later in the blog.
Olvidé mentionar cual es el proposito de este viaje. Accompañé mis amigos, Geovanny y David, durante su peregrinación anual la cual hacen antes de cada Navidad. En esta foto se puede ver Geovanny, que es lo más cercano, su hermano menor Jefferson, que es en el centro con una mochila y a su lado izquierdo es su padre, Jorge. Lod demás en la foto son los empleados de Jorge y sus familias. El Pagó por el bus para que ellos pudieran visitar el lugar también. El proximo día Los demás miembros de la familia de Jorge fueron por bus a hacer lo mismo. Los hijos, por su puesto, se quedaron en la casa. Volveré a este tema mas luego en el "blog."

This is the welcome sign. To the left you can see a bus stop where a lady was selling Empanadas (don't think Taco Bell, they have nothing to do with sugar or apples) and hot chocolate. The sign says, "Maria loves you and welcomes you" it is not a literal translation but it would sound weird if I translated it literally.
Este es el lugar en donde comimos Empanadas con chocolate. Todo lo que escribí arriba en Ingles es para explicar lo que dice la Seña y la diferencia entre su concepción de Empanadas y la de ustedes.
I am not sure who this to the right is but I can only guess that it is Mary.

To the right is another person selling breakfast things like hot chocolate and Empanadas, which were chicken where we ate. This is where the cobblestone path started and also where the religious stands started. Normally you will find stands with handicrafts and things like that. These stands sold Rosary beads and bracelets with saints on them and candles to burn at the church.
A la derecha esta alguien vendiendo desayundo. También este es donde la vía hecho de adoquínes empezó y los "stands" de cosas religiousas. Había rosarios y pulseras con santos y también velas para incendiar en la iglesia.
The lady to the right is selling potatoes and as you can see we came before many of the stores opened. All of the closed doors to the left are stores.
Ella está vendiendo papas y todas las demás tiendas estaban cerradas.

This is where we started going down the stairs. As you can see the stands continued.

These are all plaques that people put on the walls. I am not sure what purpose they serve but I would guess it is a religious right or to bless the place.
Estos son plaques que la gente puso en los muros. No estoy seguro que siervan pero supondo que es un acto religioso or tal vez para bendecir el lugar.
This is a good time to explain the significance of this place for Catholics. The legend is that the painting and mosaic was an apparition, which is to say that is appeared miraculously. Anyway it is a painting, as you will see, of a virgin Mary with two saints below her adoring her. The legend of how it was discovered is a indigenous women by the name of Maria Mueses de Quiñones was walking back from a place called Ipiales with her daughter strapped to her back they past the apparition the daughter exclaimed, "Who is this Mestiza with these two men?" she also exclaimed, which is cited above, "Mom the Mestiza is calling me." So, she not only saw but heard this women speaking to her. Mestiza means "mixed one." In this case it is feminine. It refers to the race of the individual, in this case mixed between indigenous and Spanish heritage.
Ya explico porque este lugar significa tanto para los Catolicos. La leyenda dice que el cuadro y mosaico son apariciónes, que significa que ellos aparecieron como un milagrosamente. Es una pintura de la virgin María con dos santos adorandola desde abajo. La leyenda sobre como discubrieron la aparición es que, un día, una mujer indigena la cual se llamaba María Mueses de Quiñones estaba caminando y cargando su hija desde Ipiales. Ellas pasaron la aparición y la hija exclamó, "¿Quién es la mestiza con estes dos hombres?" también exclamó "Mamita la mestiza me llama." En esta manera descubrieron la aparición.
And then we got close enough to see the top of the Cathedral which they built around the apparition.
Cuando nos acercamos un poquito más podemos ver la parte más alta de la Catedral lo cual se construyeron sobre la aparición.
And here we are going down the hill. As you can see the plaques cover the entire wall. My other friend David is to the left with the backpack and the red shirt.
Estamos bajando la colina. Se puede ver las placas sobre todo el muro. Mi otro amigo es el que está a la izquierda con la mochila y camisa roja.
This is a model of what the church looked like before they build the larger Cathedral over it.
Este es un modelo de la iglesia antes de que contruyeran la Catedral más grande sobre ella.
Above is a copy of the apparition which was on the outside of the cathedral. In this particular one they have added the people on the bottom worshiping the image as well.
Arriba es una copia de la aparición la cual estaba afuera de la Catedral. En esta copia en particular el artista (la artista) añadió la gente abajo que están adorando la imagen.

And a bottom up view of the church. It's not as large from this point as the Basilica in Quito but it is very big and it goes down a lot further. It has about three floors to it, this being the top.

To the left is a small version of the angel Michael striking down Satan and to the right is the little house where everyone puts their candles after they are blessed in the Mass.

This is the same little house with more people putting candles inside. The guy to the left is a photographer who takes pictures and sells them to people. I was the only Gringo around the whole time I was in Colombia. Not a single other foreign face.

This is a very common sight. It is called Ecuavoli. It is only played with three people and the ball is smaller and harder, but not too much harder. Also the net is way higher than normal Volleyball.
Esta es una vista común. Esto se llama Ecuavoli. Solo hay tres jugadores y la pelota normalmente es más pequeña y más dura. También la red queda muy alta en comparación con Volleyball en los estados.

We were inside of a church-cave or cave-church if you will. This had soaking wet pews and a virgin (above) which is the virgin of La Paz, which means peace.
Llegamos a una iglesia-caverna o caverna-iglesia, digamos. Había bancos que estaban mojadisimos y una virgin que es la virgin de La Paz.

The following picture are of the following day. The two kids are David and Geovanny's cousins Alik and Areli. The little boy is Alik and the girl is Areli. We were watching them while their parents were traveling.
Las siguientes con del día siguiente. Los niños son los primos de David y Geovanny, se llaman Alik y Areli. El niño es Alik y la niña es Areli. Les Cuidabamos mientras sus padres viajaban.
The picture to the left is of the two kids running. Areli asked me if I would take a picture of her Corshendo, which is normally said Corriendo, which means running. I believe she has a bit of an accent from either speaking Quichua as well, or just because she is young.
La foto a la izquierda es de los dos corriendo. Areli me preguntó si pudiera tomar una foto de ella "corchendo," o sea "corriendo," pero creo que ella tiene un poquito accento por ser chiquita or por mezclar Quichua con su Español.
David and I also painted his house that day and then we built these decorations for when the family got home. After that I went home and so ended Monday the 22nd.
También David y yo pintamos la casa y construimos estas decoraciónes para cuando la familiy regresara. Despues fui al hostal y en esta manera terminó Lunes el 22 de Diciembre.
I hope you enjoyed it and will write a new one soon. The next one will be about the preparations for Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve, and Christmas itself. It will take about two weeks to write.

Great pictures! The architecture of the cathedral is really amazing. And the land is beautiful, with all the green and the river and waterfalls.
